Likely Path to Extinction in Simple Branching Models with Large Initial Population
نویسنده
چکیده
We give explicit formulae for most likely paths to extinction in simple branching models when initial population is large. In discrete time, we study the Galton-Watson process, and in continuous time, the branching diffusion. Themost likely paths are found with the help of the large deviation principle (LDP). We also find asymptotics for the extinction probability, which gives a new expression in continuous time and recovers the known formula in discrete time. Due to the nonnegativity of the processes, the proof of LDP at the point of extinction uses a nonstandard argument of independent interest.

Asymptotic Behavior of Branching Populations before Extinction
where Xn denotes the number of offspring in the nth generation for a population starting from K offsprings, X0 = K, and throughout the paper the initial size of population K is assumed to be a large value. Such a type of branching process can be a model of real population of animals, insects etc., and the main results of our study can have applications to analysis of real populations arising in...
متن کاملLife-history models of extinction: a test with island spiders.
This study analyzes extinction patterns for two species of orb spiders monitored annually on 77 islands over a continuous 20-yr period. One species, Argiope argentata, has large populations sometimes crashing quickly to extinction and a much weaker relation of extinction likelihood to population size than does the other species, Metepeira datona. Demographic models were built for both species a...
متن کاملBranching Processes: Their Role in Epidemiology
Branching processes are stochastic individual-based processes leading consequently to a bottom-up approach. In addition, since the state variables are random integer variables (representing population sizes), the extinction occurs at random finite time on the extinction set, thus leading to fine and realistic predictions. Starting from the simplest and well-known single-type Bienaymé-Galton-Wat...

متن کاملConverging towards the optimal path to extinction.
Extinction appears ubiquitously in many fields, including chemical reactions, population biology, evolution and epidemiology. Even though extinction as a random process is a rare event, its occurrence is observed in large finite populations. Extinction occurs when fluctuations owing to random transitions act as an effective force that drives one or more components or species to vanish. Although...
